Orders of magic

Post by AmigaDragon »

After reading the Firestaff series, and now passing from Axe of the Dwarven King into Sword of fire, I have a question based on a term mentioned a few times.
We all know that there's 4 orders of magic; Sorcery, Druidic, Arcane and Priest. Where would Witchcraft fall among these, Arcane? Is it just a term generically used by the ignorant masses to denote any non-priest magic (including druidic or not).

What type of magic something is depends on where it comes from:
Divine magic channeled through priests.
The magic of the All channeled through druids.
Sorcery (which is, in a way, a divine subset with strong modifications, and rulesets) is based on what Niami arranged and is channeled through Sorcerers.
Wizardry/Arcane Magic comes from outside of Sennadar, it's an outer-dimensional form of magic that flows through the same streams that sorcery does.

Druids and Sorcerers can only use their magic if they are born into it. Wizardry and Priestly magic can be learned by anyone, more or less.

In your case, Witchcraft would fall either into the category of Wizardry or Divine, depending on how it was practiced. If it's a gift of a god or goddess to his followers, it would be classified Divine, if it used spells that channeled energy from outside Sennadar, it would be Wizardry.

Hours after reading that first response, I got to the point where Witchcraft is described as Necromancy. I'm still trying to figure out whether the Elementalists are considered Sorcerers or something else without a weave to access the elemental planes for their magic . There seem to be at least some similarities between our known Weave Sorcerers and Elementalists.
(I'm up to the point where they met up with Phandebrass and the Shadows now)

Don't worry about it, it IS explained somewhere further on in the story (either in your current book or the next one).

Yup, Fel does tends to explain things through his character. Enjoy the book and don't get bog down by the details too much.

Yup... and after you've read all 8 Tarrin Kael books, Subjugation, and the pieces of DragonStar, Alpha Project, and Legacy, you'll be just as fanatical and crazy as the rest of us... well, maybe not as crazy as Lochar and Mizriath, but crazy enough...
