I got this from http://daringfireball.net/linked/2012/05/09/hemingwayErnest Hemingway, in a terrific 1958 interview with George Plimpton:
When I am working on a book or a story I write every morning as soon after first light as possible. There is no one to disturb you and it is cool or cold and you come to your work and warm as you write. You read what you have written and, as you always stop when you know what is going to happen next, you go on from there. You write until you come to a place where you still have your juice and know what will happen next and you stop and try to live through until the next day when you hit it again.

Re: Ernest Hemingway about his writing process
For what it's worth, I do the opposite. I get up late, do my normal things during the day, then after midnight, when others sleep, I write. I do write every day, but most of my writing is never seen by any one group. I write under a total of four nyms now (at one time it was nine!) and my writing still appears on the net quite often.
I'm no Hemingway, just a guy who has the bad habit of stringing words together into sentences. KP

What caugh my attention more is the bit about stopping at a place where he knew what happened next.
Re: Ernest Hemingway about his writing process
yes, but you'd have to hunt to find them. I won't help you! In other words, either they were written for material gain and I refuse to cut off the income I receive for them, tiny though it may be, or else I'm not proud of the stories I wrote under that nym.gnume wrote:any others out there ?
I do that when I can, but sometimes you have second thoughts and change your mind. That's when writing gets tougher and at times it means the story takes off in a character driven direction. I hate that! As a result I've found that I do best if I stick to the original outline of the plot and the original character derivation.zedd wrote:What caugh my attention more is the bit about stopping at a place where he knew what happened next.

Re: Ernest Hemingway about his writing process
I can't write very well, as some people on this forum can attest to, but I do like the idea of stopping at a place where you know what happens next. ie.) If I'm trying to flesh out a D&D characters back story I often get an idea, run with it, then once I've written 3-4 (2-3) paragraphs I hit a brick wall. I think I should step back when I still have some ideas, and wait till the next day to finish it off.

Maybe give us a hint of those nym's so we can help with with that material gain thing?GBLW wrote: yes, but you'd have to hunt to find them. I won't help you! Re: Ernest Hemingway about his writing process
Actually I write for a small publication that serves a very small niche market, but I intentionally keep my 'business life' separate from my fictional writing. I've already ruined one perfectly good hobby by turning it into a profit making venture. I refuse to do that again!Bester wrote:Maybe give us a hint of those nym's so we can help with with that material gain thing?
Thanks for the offer though.
