Subjugation in EPUB/LIT/MOBI

Post by Sherman »

Well, I wanted to try out the new version of sigil (http://code.google.com/p/sigil/) so I thought I'd create some nice new versions for ebook readers.

I created the ePub using a combination of Notepad++ and Sigil.
I then imported the ePub into Calibre, and created MS LIT and Mobipocket files from it.

ePub file can be read on the likes of Sony, Nook, iPad, iPod Touch/iPhone, Cybook etc.
The lit file is for those still using Pocket PC/Windows Mobile PDA's and smartphones. Also for those who prefer the MS Reader software over others.
The Mobipocket file is for those with Kindles.

All files have an external TOC that should work with your reading software (external TOC means no internal hyperlinks for TOC).

I've experimented with drop caps for the ePub file. The drop caps were converted to large first letter in the other formats. Can anyone who tries the ePub version let me know what they think of the dropcaps please?

Cheers,
Sherman

* Update *
I found a show stopping technical boo-boo that meant that most Sony e-book readers couldn't open the ePub file.
Basically, most of the Sony readers use an early version of Adobe Digital Editions that can't handle individual xhtml flows larger than 300K in size. I forgot to check the file before uploading and so missed that chapter 20 was over 400KB!!

Chapter 20 has now been split in half (you may notice a "random" page break halfway through the chapter).

I've also made some cosmetic changes to the file (for my own purposes - they may not be to your liking...)

NOTE: for the new epub version, I have simply changed the .epub extension to .zip . As ePub files are actually zip archives, you can open it with your favorite Zip program to see its contents. Alternatively, change it's extension back to .epub to open in your favorite reading program/device

I recently got a Sony Pocket Reader so I was able to try out the epub. It works perfectly! I like the drop cap, adds a little something extra. Now the rest of my Fel ebooks look a little drab. I may have to play with Sigil more myself!

Well done!

Thanks for the feedback. I've played around a bit more with dropcaps since I made this, and I think I finally have them just about right.

I only wish that there was such a thing as a proper dropcap class, tag, or style that ePub renderers would recognize and display appropriately, rather than the current font size and margin trickery that is currently required....
