Thou art our savior ! Now we can quench our thirst for prime "readstuffs" and endure the painful wait , until His Divinity Fel ("the dirty sinner" to his most intimate of friends) deigns to allow us the pleasure to lay our unworthy eyes on a new chapter of his grand epic's

We bow before thee and roll in the dust !

Umm, is this legit? Meaning, does Baen allow putting up the CD material or is this just plain old piracy? I was browsing this forum section for new reading material but don't want no hassles.

You had some doubts about legal status

Here is the reply

Moral of the story: read carefully.

Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't have read the web site legal disclaimers since I shouldn't/don't/won't/can't visit web sites offering anything that offers copies of CDs. As a business owner and software author, I simply can't affort the risk of anything that hints of piracy. Some of us "old folks" have a lot to lose so we tend to be a bit (or more than a bit) paranoid.

While I do not disagree that Baen did this, I really do not think they ment for 2 books to be posted to the Web that are just coming out on HardCover...

Edit:

Heck I bought the ARC of At all Costs, I could have posted it to the web but it felt Wrong somehow...

I went directly to the Baen free story web pages
http://www.baen.com/library/

Interesting. They seem to encourage people to pass the free stuff around. I didn't find anything saying you could copy the CDs or put the contents on a web site ... but ... I didn't find anything saying you couldn't. The stories on the CD are all free and available on the Baen web site but the CD organizes them.

Several non-Baen web sites said that the CD has a notice that it may be copied and distributed so I'll go for it.

Thanks all,

PS - For those who are wondering what software I have written, it is a variety of specialized custom business applications. The software has included custom accounts reveivables/payables, document tracking, job cost/manufacturing and B2B (business to business) EDI (electronic data interchange).

15-20 years ago I "broke" dBase III (or was it dBase II) ? and ended up using Fox Software's FoxBase. That evolved to FoxBase+ then FoxPro then was eventually purchased by Microsoft and became Visual FoxPro.

If you look at the jpgs of the CDs themselves they state

"Notice: This disk and its contents may be copied and shared, but NOT sold. All commercial rights reserved."
Qoute taken from the At All Costs CD

http://baencd.thefifthimperium.com/09-A ... ostsCD.jpg

Granted that photo could be doctored, but I am inclined to believe that it in fact what it says

I've seen similar text on the other Baen CDs, and I believe there is actually a site somewhere on baen.com where it reiterates those same allowances.

In an effort to save the bandwidth of the folks running http://baencd.thefifthimperium.com/

I've started mirroring the Baen CDs locally.

You can find them here:

Thank you very much. The "Fifthimperium" web site has a notice up that they are having record traffic and may have their speed throttled.

People ... please don't get greedy and overload the Sennadar web site also. One a day should suffice but I really don't think you will make it through even a single CD in one day. I might finish my first CD (There Will be Dragons by John Ringo) if I don't decide to work tomorrow and take Monday off. However, I'm only on chapter 20 of 44 and my eyes are starting to sting a bit. Maybe I'll try the audio version.

After checking a few non-Baen web sites ands seeing a CD jacket pic, I agree all the Baen CD copying and mirroring is OK.

Here is a Baen link and quote explaining one of their CDs.

http://www.baen.com/hf_orientation.htm

"Just remember, as with every other file on this disk, you can copy it, and you can give it away, but you may not sell it!"

With several Baen CDs containing who knows how many e-novels, I may be able to wait patiently for the next Were God adventure ... but just so it is not too long ... <LOL>

Darn it, I should have applied for that job babysitting a mainframe at night for a large company. They said "bring a book". Can't beat getting paid to read!

I've got a bit more bandwidth on hand than the FifthImperium site (about 248GB/month available at the moment, increasing by 2GB/week), and I'm using less than 20GB/month over about 4 active sites - so if people want to download all the CDs, go for it :)

I keep an eye on the bandwidth usage, so don't worry too much :)

Cool! ... and THANK YOU again!

BTW, did you notice that the Sennadar Forum got real quiet since the Baen CD links were posted? ;-) I'm probably not the only one with bleary eyes. <LOL> Finished "There Will Be Dragons" (Council War series #1) from Baen free CD #4 and decided to buy the next two ebooks from the Baen http://www.webscription.net web site.

I love the Honor Harrington series... I even bought the ARC of at all costs so I could read it back in August... can't wait for the next book..
