Fair enough, to each his own. However who wouldn't want to fly one of these babies! Sign me up for flight school!

Thanks Fel,

Though I would love either a shadow walker or Jason story, I understand how it is.

(Oh Muse please lead him towards those stories.)

I kind of missed out on the start of the Kit story and now can't find the first 19 chapters or so. Anyone know where to find them? The forum page use to have a link to an organized story listing page but once I found that page it seems old and outdated.

You need to go back to the last page of 'chapter annoucements' and look for 'ummm...some as of yet unnamed story, chapter 1.'
then 'THAT STORY (which I will disavow in public)...chapter 2.' and such. They dont have kit in the title and most of the rest only say chapter #, so just click on all the posts like that and look for kit in the filename to see if it's the right story.

Given Fel's reluctance to even accept donations to keep the site up, this seems doubtful.
Fel has been accepting donations over in this thread (stickied in the General Discussions board) since mid 2007.

Some of that donation money went towards renewing the domain back at that time - if for whatever reason Fel didn't pay for it though, I'll keep renewing it as long as I still have access to the billing info - it's sitting on my account. (Fel can yank it back at any time though)

The current hosting is provided by me, it's a sub-account from the hosting I already have - and I believe my current hosting plan doesn't expire until April 2010 (yes, 2010 is a short 12 months away - Scary, eh?) so the site is (reasonably) safe until then.

Yep, that's how I know that it's with reluctance on his part, he really would rather provide his stories completely free-of-charge, as a gift of himself to those who are fortunate to have discovered his work.

At this time, I can't remember how I discovered his work, on who's web page I found a link which led me here. I'm just glad I did.

Doesn't quite understand the "I want to thank you for this pleasure you've provided me, can we help cover your expenses" school of active socialism some are willing to espouse. From each according to their abilities, to each according to their needs, and society as individuals as well as a whole may take part in evaluating what counts as a viable contribution, and giving in return as they can, some by becoming Leaders of the Off-Topic, fellow-travelers in creation as it were, others by wanting to make sure there's toast and marmalade on the tea tray come tea time, and not being able to physically trot into the room with the dainties wanting to at least help pay for them.

And if this metapontificating isn't "off-topic", don't know what is! *grin*

Fel, Thanks - but you know you're killing me with these long-ass chapters :)

I get home at midnight after working - and think "Oh, a chapter would be okay to read before I sleep" - next thing I know it's 3AM :P

Read chapters 26 and 27 tonight, I'll definitely be sleep deprived getting up for work in another 3 hours or so. Definitely worth it though. I don't know if an experienced commercial pilot could do all that Kit did in a 6 week course, but I want to believe it! Thanks Fel for providing so much entertainment for so long. Hope all is well with you and that do/did great on your finals. As well as your imagination & reasearch works in your stories, you've got to be doing great in school.
With highest regards!

As a pilot, and someone who has flown jets I found parts of this Chapter a bit... well let's just say I skimmed certain parts. I can understand that you're not a pilot and don't understand how the licensing scheme and endorsements work, or certain other things. But a few odds and ends I thought I would share, up to you if you care or not, I know this section was written some time ago.

1) A tower will never 'wave you off'. They're not flying the aircraft, unless a ground obstacle appears they don't interfere much. Now an LSU, if there is one might send you around, but that's military.
2) Jets are -way- easier to fly that props IMHO, though everything does happen a lot faster. No 'P' factor and a lot less vibration up front.
3) Flying in unpressurized cabins as you get higher is tiring. Over 20,000 feet you have to wear a full mask as you start getting in to pressure breathing where the air is literally forced into your lungs. Do that for 3 or 4 hours and you feel like you ran a marathon, it's very tiring.
4) if you've been breathing supplemental oxygen you will usually wake up in the middle of the night with an ear ache and have to pop your ears. That's because your inner ear canal eventually fulls up with a richer oxygen load than normal. That Oxygen is absorbed directly into your body thru the walls of the ear canal and you get lower pressure in your ears. The higher concentration of O2, the worse it gets. Worse one I ever got was after doing #3 above. landed, had dinner, went to bed. Ouch.
5) Oxygen is the cure for a hangover. Ask any military pilot. :-)
6) I wish I had a rich sister to buy me a nice airplane. I haven't flown in ages because I either don't have the time, or don't have the money. Of course I'd want a jet, or an acrobatics plane. Just flying from point A to B isn't as much fun as it used to be.

Oh and I've actually been to the Cessna plant, years ago. The salesmen there dress like the salesman from WKRP (or at least used to. Bright Plaid! My eyes!). Sadly they're shutting everything down there and moving most of it overseas now.

. . . deleted for brevity . . .
Umph hmm just a couple of points!

#1 - this thread is prominently marked as a "No Spoiler Zone." :? :|

#2 - you are dealing with a science fiction story -- who said Fel's creation had to have the same physical characteristics as your world?

Umm, he has pretty much copied the names (and even the behavior) of a lot of public people into the story. Maybe that's why I got sucked into it? Because it seems like our world on so many levels.

Also, without constructive criticism, how will he continue to grow and improve as a writer? I think Fel is a very gifted writer and I want to see him get even better.

last, considering where in the story this is, I don't think I gave any spoilers as to the chapter. Though I apologize if I did.

As a writer myself, I'd be the last to argue against constructive criticism, but what I would argue is that what you wrote is NOT constructive in any way.
Fel has used certain facts in a certain manner which disagrees with real life -- we know that, but you can do that in fiction, especially in Science Fiction. Now you seem to be implying that he should rewrite and 'correct' those facts. Unfortunately if he did that he'd have to change multiple sentences, phrases and paragraphs throughout the story -- not just in one chapter either. He would have to have his characters reacting differently and that would change the plot in multiple minor ways. Yes, the tale would be more 'true to life' but I think it would have much less impact because as it is written it 'flows' -- quite smoothly -- and it wouldn't if those changes were made.
If you want to know what I mean, just reread that same section and make note of all the changes he would have to make to the actions of his characters -- especially Kit's actions.
Personally I read that section and 'suspended my disbelief' about the points which didn't match the real world.

As for whether you contributed a spoiler or not -- I felt you did, but then I'm known to be a crotchety old curmudgeon.
Had you place your comments in the "Book Specific Discussions" under "Kit-Chapter 27," I wouldn't have said word one!

When ever I make a comment to any author, I do not expect them to change anything. That is solely up to them.
