Need some new author recommendations!

Okay so you know what I like to read... I read the older BAEN publishing authors: David Weber, John Ringo, Eric Flint, Ryk Spoor, etc.

Recently I have gotten into independent authors who self publish on Amazon: Glynn Stewart, E William Brown, Will Wight - I recommend these writers.

I like adventure books Clive Clusser and a mystery now and then J.D. Robbs In Death series... but military sci-fi, space opera, etc...

I will admit I am picky. David Weber is pretty much top drawer for me. John Ringo is excellent but the man has not been writing much at all for the last few years. Eric Flint and Ryk Spoor are good writers, but some of their stuff I just won't read.

Glynn Stewart is pretty darn good don't get me wrong but he doesn't go all techy and discuss missile systems or ship design for 2-3 pages right in the middle of a chapter (David Weber). He is a good writer but doesn't have David's way with words. Nor does his heroine go all butchery and slice and dice a few folks who richly deserve it (John Ringo). Yes I'm probably a disturb individual. That said I like Military Sci-fi, Space Opera, Urban fantasy/urban paranormal, even if it has a bit of romance in it. See Ilona Andrews books.

That said I'm looking for some recommendations folks! Just finished re-reading the entire Honor Harrington series! Help me out please!

Hmmm

In Military SF try Mark Wandery and Chris Kennedy's Revelations Cycle and Omega War series: https://www.amazon.com/Cartwrights-Cava ... 176&sr=8-9

You can also try Alma Boykins Cat Among Dragon's series which is mix of a little Mil SF with a dash of Paranormal thrown into a shorta tribute to the Jon Pertwee era Doctor Who (The MC is a time traveler that spends half her time on Earth working as a science adviser...in England...driving a certain car...and the other half on a planet run by large Reptiles with a Samurai style culture). There is also her alt hist/Mil SF series the Colplatski Chronicles and her Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Familiar Tales books and her single shot Alexander Soldier's Son. Please note that many of her series such as Cat Among Dragons or Familiar Tales are told as short stories instead of chapters in an overarching but loose story, also she uses alot of Eastern Europe mythology so it reads alot different from normal US Fantasy (Alexander Soldier's Son deals a lot with Baba Yaga as an example). https://www.amazon.com/kindle-dbs/entit ... ctorHeader

There is Nick Cole and Jason Anspach's take on a Star Wars style story/series Galaxy's Edge: https://www.amazon.com/Legionnaire-Gala ... ext&sr=1-4

There is Jan Stryvant/John Van Stry's two fantasy series: The Valens Legacy and Portals of Infinity:
https://www.amazon.com/Black-Friday-Val ... pons&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/Portals-Infinity ... 175&sr=1-2

The Honor Harrington series was inspired by C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower series. Another series that is also inspired by Horatio Hornblower is Thomas Deprima's A Galaxy Unknown series. Its got some similarlies with Honor Harrington. Strong, larger-than-life female main character, kicking ass in space battles and more. A bit of luck involved sometimes though and it might be argued that she is a bit of a Mary Sue character. I loved it more then Honor Harrington by quite a bit (probably due to personal preference). It's a lighter, happier read for sure, which is what I like. Oh, you might not find his newer books on amazon in kindle because he seemed to have issues with them for some reason. They should be available on other ebook sale sites though.

If you want sci-fi inventor books, I will always first recommend everything by Laurence Dahners. Awesome books and he just recently put all his books on kindle unlimited so thats great. Mackey Chandler's April series is pretty good too.

Books about the character being displaced to anoher world like Daniel Black..... only two recommendations I can think of. One, already mentioned above is Portals of Infinity. The author has recently said he is planning the next book in the series, which means he might take a break from Valens to write it soon. He's a fast writer so I'm hoping for the next Portals of Infinity within a few months. Second recommendation is Demons of Astlan by J. L Langland. Thats all I can think of in those sub-genre's. Hope this helps you out.

The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. Mystery Noir with Fantasy elements. Harry is a Wizard for Hire in Chicago (even says so in the phone book). Has a really good explanation of why no one knows about the Paranormal stuff. First in the series is "Storm Front". Has 15 books, he is working on #16.

Jim Butcher's other series Codex Alera is good as well. Supposedly, that one started from him saying something like "There is no bad concept, just bad execution" in a forum, and then someone challenged him to do "Pokemon/Roman Legion". First one is "Furies of Calderon". Completed at 6 books.

I'd add more, but in looking up which books were first, I got sucked into starting a reread of The Dresden Files.

Sounds like your reading tastes are similar to mine.

When I fancy a break from SciFi, in the same theme of mystery/ fantasy/paranormal I read, Patricia Briggs "Mercedes Thompson" series, Michelle Sagara "Chronicles of Elantra" series and Llona Andrews "Kate Daniels" series.

On the sci-fi front, I am long overdue for a reread of Peter F. Hamilton's series "Confederation" and "Commonwealth" universes. They are big reads but well worth the hours.

Also been skimming some lit-rpg and lighter free fiction within RoyalRoad.com (great authors include Vihyungrang and Exterminatus).

I started reading Daedalus and absolutely flew through the 121 available chapters in about 2 days. Military sci-fi focused around exo-suit and mecha. So far there is very little actual live combat, but the plot starts with a 9-year-old protagonist with a goal to start at military academy. There is a strong influence from Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game, but has a very different plot. There is some feeling of Harry Potter as well since the academy is divided into houses with different strengths and focuses. There is a lot of technology and exo / mech development, as well as squad building and tactical engagements. Exo-suit and mecha designs are very reminiscent of Battletech universe, though not a direct copy.

If you have Kindle Unlimited, the first 2 books are available on amazon at no additional cost: https://www.amazon.com/Daedalus-Militar ... 217&sr=1-2

Chapters yet unpublished can be found at Royal Road Legends, written under the author's handle, Skully.

The other option of reading his story from the beginning is signing up for $1 / month at his patreon: https://www.patreon.com/skullysln
He also has advance chapters available there at higher tiers of membership.

An author I could suggest is:

Christopher G. Nuttall
http://www.chrishanger.net/

He writes sci-fi, fantasy, alternate history.
His own favorite authors are on your list.

Well, you may or may not like Lazlo Zalezac over on SOL, I'd recommend starting with his Jade Force of Misera, as it ties in with the Mil SF theme (to an extent).

Count me in as a second recommendation for Christopher G Nuttal. His Schooled in Magic series is great, though it’s pointed in a different direction than your interests. You liked reading the Firestaff series though so I think you’d like it. Regardless, Nuttal writes a lot of sci-fi too so check that out.

Wow, really enjoyed Vihyungrang on royalroad. https://www.royalroad.com/profile/6277/fictions Sadness, only 2 complete stories and another just started. Very much influenced by Wuxia/Xianxia which I enjoy. Lots of Wuxia/Xianxia on https://www.novelupdates.com/.
