Weavespinnder dynamics

Post by Kacoo »

Im sure it was answered obliquely in text, but which sui'kins birth was responsible for opening the door to ascension? Because if it was Tarrin or Jenna wouldn't someone that was consumed in the time before their arrival at the tower have worked out the path. Or is it a case of everyone that could, knew their limits as therefore never came close to crossing over.

I've conveniently been re-reading the Firestaff series recently, so I can hopefully answer with some authority.

It was Tarrin's birth which opened the door, so it had been open ~17 years at the start of the series.

Since there was no knowledge left of the possibility of crossing over, the katzh-dashi had become so afraid of being consumed that their use of power was generally quite controlled, this was included in all their training. You could suggest that the Goddess could have poked some of the sorcerers to cross over, but without them having the knowledge it was possible she may have worried about losing more of her children.

Something related to this I had wondered about though, is that it was implied

had crossed over since the breaking (that there were younger da'shar). I'm not sure if this is correct, or whether somehow they could pass through the ward and cross over.

I haven't read the series in a while but i don't think anyone crossed over inside the ward. Only the older generations were weavespinners so far as I know.

Grey more or less explained it. Tarrin represented the return of high-order magic, not only for Sorcerers, but for all other orders of magic as well. Wizards regained the ability to conjure extra-dimensional creatures, such as Elementals or Demons. Priests regained the ability to commune directly with their gods (which was why the Goddess could talk to Tarrin in the first place, that was a form of direct communion). And while Druids didn't regain a specific ability, they did enjoy an increase in the power of their magic, which expanded the abilities of the Druids...at least those brave enough to experiment.

Before he was born, Sorcerers who reached the point where they would cross over and become da'shar were instead Consumed because the door was closed. So, from the Breaking to Tarrin's birth, Sorcerers were trained to avoid it by any means necessary, and the Goddess didn't intentionally prod any of her children to cross over the way she did Tarrin. All the Sorcerers that remembered the da'shar from the Age of Power were either dead or on Sha'Kari, and all their lore was hidden behind the language barrier of Sha'Kar, so there was nobody that knew that there was a next level, or how to reach it.

I can't recall the exact book and chapter, but the Goddess explains all of this to Tarrin, not long after he crosses over. And she hints about a great deal of it leading up to that event.
Just another guy from the shallow end of the gene pool.

Honor and Blood (book 3), Chapter 16 is when Niami explains things to Tarrin. There's anther conversation between Tarrin and Spyder in the samer book (before their lessons) that explains/elaborates on the other orders of magic regaining their old powers as well.

I feel the need to point out that the Sha'kar under the ward couldn't become Da'shar. They specifically were unable to commune with the Goddess while under the ward and becoming a Da'shar requires going to the heart and thus being able to commune with her. Pretty sure they mention this to Tarrin during his sojurn there.
