Re: Links to Good Reading (Part 2)

Let me introduce two amazing sources for the modern scholar to you - they are called google and wikipedia. About two minutes of search unearthed this, the Nights in audio format in arabic, and even a whole website dedicated to them.

Have fun!

Re: Links to Good Reading (Part 2)

Has anyone read Robert Buettner - Orphanage series. I finish the first book and found it real good from my perspective. I think that post should go to the "Good Books" thread, don't you? Haven't read anything from Buettner at all, though. Recently I have been reading quite a bit of Naruto...

Try this link:

Going backwards chronologically with the forward/backwards links at the bottom of the posts worked for me!

Re: Links to Good Reading (Part 2)

Baens free library has three new books online: Marc Stiegler, Earthweb David Drake, Starliner David Weber, The Shadow of Saganami Especially Stiegler's Earthweb is a nice read, despite the awful, awful blurb. Oops, just saw that this was already rec'd in Good Sci-Fi books. Oh well, here is some good...

Some HP fanfiction by Neisseria: Rustlings in the Dark
A refreshing AU, where Harry becomes friends with Padma Patil. Features an interesting charms club as well - I always love reading about new spells!

Re: Good Books (Scifi)

Thanks for the recs! I have already read Donaldson, and can't stand May - but I had read only Jhereg by Steven Brust, and then I forgot all about him. So I ordered two more of this cycle, and the first two books of Hamiltons new void trilogy. I've also ordered Neal Stephenson's Anathem . I, ahem, &q...

Re: Good Books (Scifi)

Urgent Request: Amazon has an offer of -25% on books delivered to Switzerland until the end of November - but I don't know what to buy! Any ideas? Authors I've read and enjoyed: Rothfuss, Frank Herbert, Alistair Reynolds, Jim Butcher, Modesitt, Jordan (well, at the beginning anyway), Tolkien, J.K Mo...

French SciFi/Fantasy

Hey all, any French here? The other day I picked up a French SF Novel (actually a translation of one of Steven Brust's Dragearan novels) and suddenly noticed that my French is finally, finally good enough that I can read novels and actually enjoy them. Now I'd like some recommendations for French au...

That is the Takeshi Kovacs trilogy: Altered Carbon, Broken Angels and Woken Furies, by Richard K Morgan. Awesome, gritty SF!

Re: Something I don't understand with Hybrid cars.

There is indeed research in using waste heat from the engine to generate electricity - if you can do that efficiently enough, then you can replace the alternator that normally tops up your battery - and eats about 5% of the power of the engine. And solar cells are unfortunately too expensive - yet. ...

Re: Something I don't understand with Hybrid cars.

It comes down to efficiency. Let's say that your conventional engine generates 100 horsepower. It will be more efficient (i.e. use less fuel) than a "normal" car engine, because all it has to do is turn the generator, which it can do at a constant RPM. The generator takes those 100hp and g...

Re: Something I don't understand with Hybrid cars.

It all comes down to TANSTAAFL (there ain't no such thing as a free lunch) and Newtons first law of motion (a body at rest or in constant motion tends to remain in it's state unless acted upon by an exterior force). When you get in your car, it is a body at rest, and to get it in motion you (i.e. th...

Re: Good Books (Scifi)

I have just finished "The Name of the Wind" , by Patrick Rothfuss. It is the first part of a trilogy, and more than deservedly won the Quill Award for Best Fantasy of 2007. It's awesome. I am a voracious reader, and quite unhappy if I don't read at least two novels a week. I am happy to re...
