Mother of Learning was very good, thanks - a pity it's slow to update.

There are many fanfics for Royal Road - Eye of Adventure is not one of the good ones, IMO.

Mordant's Need is a readable duology by Stephen Donaldson - who does write well, if not always to one's taste. If you're looking for space opera, I can recommend David Brin's Uplift Universe (especially the Uplift War), the various adventures of Miles Vorkosigan (by Bujold) and Iain Banks' various C...

It's not that bad - somewhat light reading. The self-recrimination is annoying, but not terribly so - there's enough story to actually read. I've read all three.
