Death to Jack Frost!

Post by Fel »

Ice storms are no fun. Lost power Tuesday night, got it back Sunday morning.

It was a mess.
Just another guy from the shallow end of the gene pool.

Ouch.

We had a three year period back in the late 70s with week long ice storms each winter, but we never lost power. We did take my sister back to college in the midst of one, with me using a hammer to break a path to the van so we could carry her stuff out; you can still see some of the impact marks on the concrete from the hammer blows!

So... someone's going to be tacky, might as well get it over with; this negatively impacted your writing, didn't it?

On a more appropriate note, glad you have power back, hope other recovery is going well [you know, downed tree limbs, power lines, mud slides with the melt, all the nifty things that go with ice storms], and remember that you are important to us for more than just excellent writing.

You know I live near Tampa, FL, and I'd take having No AC vs no heat when it's Below freezing..

Ya no AC suxx, but won't really kill ya (well maybe heat stroke) vs Freezing to death..

At least you do not need electricity to keep warm, you can always burn heretics.

On a related note, where is Mizriath when you need him?*

*Yes I know pollution from burning heretics can contribute to climate change, however scientific studies have proven that actually burning heretics produces less pollution than the flame wars they produce if you don't burn them.
Rational people have supported the worst dictators of history - Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, etc.

I'm mad - at least I have an excuse for what I do.

hmm lets see, freeze to death or sweat to death, six in one half dozen in the other. I went through a loss of power for a week during the blizzard of 1977 and loss of power for over a week due to Mt. Pinatubo's eruption in 1992 in the Philippines. So talking from experiance they are both equally unpleasant.

As to burning heretics to keep warm they were in short supply in a small town in Pa, almost as rare as virgins to sacrifice to the gods of electricty to return.
The Mizriath Jihad is on hold.....for the moment

Being without power due to ice is the worst. NO heat unless you are lucky enough to either use Propane or natural gas for cooking. Then light the stove and hope you don't die of asphixiations (sp). I can't tell you how many times I've been through it. Longest was almost two weeks. But you want cold, try a syberian express. When I was a kid in Iowa they came through often. 20-40 below actual temps with high winds. Wind chill 100-140 below. Now that's cold. For heat, we had that too. At least when I was a kid. This global warming has taken the edge off at both extreams. I remember most of August would be 100 plus with high humidity. And we couldn't afford AC. It's a world better now that global warming has kicked in and mellowed the temps and extreams in weather. Althugh I will never forget April 9, 1973.......10 foot snow drifts. That whole winter was bad. Some cars were lost for months on the side of the road, and people got lost in the blizards. They used dozers to clear city streats because nothing else could get through. Living in the country it took over a week to get to town, we had no running water (frozen) and electricity was intermitten. At least we were off school for two weeks, althoguh we paid for it with saturdays and school lasting well into summer.

Come on global warming. I don't like winter nor the too hot summers.

I forgot to caution. If Fel, or anyone gets a generator, especially for their computer or other electronics, please pay a LOT of attention to protecting that equipment. Generators cause a lot of power spikes and dips. Get a lot of protection between the generator and your electronics. Preferably don't plug in the electronics until the generator is running effeciently, but keep a good UPS and a couple surge suppressors on the line. Don't need Fel to have a 90% completed story and a generator kicking on killing his hard drive and computer and who knows what else.
